What is an echo scan?

An echocardiogram, also known as an “echo” or an “echo scan,” is a type of medical imaging test that uses sound waves to produce images of the heart. This non-invasive test helps doctors evaluate the heart’s structure and function, and can be used to diagnose and monitor a wide range of cardiovascular conditions.

During an echocardiogram, a technician will place a small device called a transducer on the patient’s chest, which emits high-frequency sound waves. These waves bounce off the heart and are picked up by the transducer, which sends the information to a computer that creates images of the heart in real-time. The test is painless, and typically takes 30-60 minutes to complete.

There are several types of echocardiograms, each with a specific purpose:

Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE): This is the most common type of echocardiogram, and involves placing the transducer on the chest wall to produce images of the heart.

Stress echocardiogram: This test is performed while the patient is exercising or receiving medication to make the heart beat faster, in order to evaluate how the heart responds to stress.

Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE): In this test, a small transducer is passed down the patient’s throat and into the esophagus, providing a clearer view of the heart than a TTE.

Doppler echocardiogram: This test uses sound waves to evaluate the movement of blood through the heart and blood vessels, and can help diagnose conditions such as heart valve abnormalities.

Echocardiograms are often used to diagnose conditions such as heart disease, heart failure, congenital heart defects, and abnormal heart rhythms. They can also be used to monitor the progression of these conditions, and to assess the effectiveness of treatments such as medication or surgery.

Overall, echocardiograms are a safe, non-invasive, and effective way for doctors to evaluate the heart and diagnose a wide range of cardiovascular conditions.
