Types of skin grains

Skin grains are small, raised bumps or lesions on the skin that can have different causes and presentations. Here are some of the most common types of skin grains:

Milia: These are small, white or yellowish bumps that usually appear on the face, particularly around the eyes, cheeks, and nose. Milia occur when dead skin cells become trapped in the pores and form small cysts.

Keratosis pilaris: This condition causes small, rough, raised bumps on the skin that look like goosebumps or chicken skin. Keratosis pilaris most commonly appears on the upper arms, thighs, and buttocks.

Seborrheic keratosis: These are non-cancerous growths that appear as small, waxy, brown or black bumps on the skin. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the face, chest, and back.

Dermatofibroma: These are small, firm, reddish-brown bumps that usually occur on the legs. They are typically painless and harmless, but may be itchy or tender to the touch.

Cherry angioma: These are small, bright red bumps that appear on the skin. They are caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels and are more common in people over the age of 30.

Skin tags: These are small, soft, flesh-colored growths that hang off the skin. They are most commonly found on the neck, armpits, and groin.

Treatment for skin grains depends on the underlying cause. Milia may resolve on their own, but can also be treated with extraction by a dermatologist. Keratosis pilaris can be managed with moisturizers and exfoliants. Seborrheic keratoses, dermatofibromas, cherry angiomas, and skin tags can be removed with minor surgical procedures, such as cryotherapy or electrosurgery.

It is important to have any new or changing skin lesions evaluated by a dermatologist to rule out any potential underlying medical conditions or skin cancer.
