The signs of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents are similar to those in adults and may include:
Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse or urination
Abnormal vaginal discharge or penile discharge
Genital itching, burning, or redness
Sores, bumps, or blisters on or around the genitals, anus, or mouth
Pain or swelling in the testicles or scrotum (in males)
Abnormal bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods (in females)
Swollen lymph nodes in the groin area
Fever or other flu-like symptoms
Adolescents who are sexually active or who have had unprotected sex are at risk of STIs. It’s important for them to get tested and treated promptly if they experience any of these symptoms. They should also use barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, to prevent the spread of STIs.
