Angina pectoris and ways to prevent it

Angina pectoris, commonly referred to as angina, is a condition characterized by chest pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart muscle doesn’t receive enough blood flow. This pain or discomfort is usually felt in the chest, but it can also be felt in the arms, neck, jaw, shoulder or back. Angina is usually a symptom of an underlying heart condition, such as coronary artery disease, and can be a warning sign of a heart attack.

There are two types of angina: stable angina and unstable angina. Stable angina is the most common type and occurs during physical exertion or emotional stress. It usually goes away with rest or medication. Unstable angina, on the other hand, is a more serious condition that occurs even at rest and may not go away with medication. It is a warning sign of a heart attack and requires immediate medical attention.

Here are some ways to prevent angina pectoris:

Control your blood pressure: High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and can increase your risk of developing angina. You can control your blood pressure by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and taking medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Quit smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease and can increase your risk of developing angina. If you smoke, quitting can help reduce your risk.

Manage your cholesterol: High levels of cholesterol in the blood can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can cause angina. You can manage your cholesterol by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and taking medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Exercise regularly: Regular exercise can help improve your heart health and reduce your risk of developing angina. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, most days of the week.

Eat a healthy diet: A healthy diet that is low in saturated and trans fats, salt, and added sugars can help reduce your risk of developing angina. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet.

Manage stress: Stress can trigger angina in some people. Find ways to manage your stress, such as through meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.
