Causes of early miscarriage

Miscarriage, also known as spontaneous abortion, is the loss of pregnancy before the 20th week. It is a common experience for many women, with around 10-20% of known pregnancies ending in miscarriage. While the cause of miscarriage can be difficult to determine, there are several known factors that can increase the risk.

Here are some of the most common causes of early miscarriage:

Chromosomal abnormalities: The most common cause of early miscarriage is chromosomal abnormalities, which occur when there are abnormalities in the number or structure of the chromosomes in the embryo. This can happen for many reasons, including advanced maternal age, exposure to toxins, or underlying genetic conditions.

Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances, such as low progesterone levels, can also increase the risk of early miscarriage. Progesterone is essential for maintaining a healthy pregnancy, as it helps to thicken the uterine lining and prevent it from shedding.

Infections: Infections, such as bacterial vaginosis, listeria, and toxoplasmosis, can increase the risk of miscarriage. These infections can be prevented or treated with appropriate medical care.

Chronic medical conditions: Chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and thyroid disease, can increase the risk of early miscarriage.

Structural abnormalities: Structural abnormalities in the uterus, such as fibroids, septum, or scar tissue from previous surgeries, can increase the risk of early miscarriage.

Lifestyle factors: Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, drug use, and excessive alcohol consumption, can also increase the risk of early miscarriage.

It’s important to note that in many cases, the cause of miscarriage is unknown. However, if you experience any symptoms of early miscarriage, such as vaginal bleeding, cramping, or back pain, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider right away. They can provide you with the appropriate care and support during this difficult time.
