How to treat stomach acidity

Stomach acidity, also known as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a condition in which the stomach’s contents flow back up into the esophagus, causing discomfort and irritation. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including certain foods, stress, smoking, and certain medical conditions. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to treat stomach acidity.

Lifestyle changes: One of the most effective ways to treat stomach acidity is to make certain lifestyle changes. These may include losing weight, avoiding spicy and fatty foods, quitting smoking, and reducing stress. Elevating the head of your bed by a few inches can also help keep stomach acid in the stomach.

Antacids: Antacids are medications that neutralize stomach acid. They work quickly and provide temporary relief from the symptoms of stomach acidity. Some common antacids include Tums, Rolaids, and Mylanta.

H2 blockers: H2 blockers are medications that decrease the production of stomach acid. They are effective for longer periods of time than antacids and can be taken once or twice a day. Some common H2 blockers include Pepcid, Zantac, and Axid.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs): PPIs are medications that block the production of stomach acid entirely. They are very effective at treating stomach acidity and can be taken once a day. Some common PPIs include Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid.

Surgery: In severe cases of stomach acidity that don’t respond to other treatments, surgery may be necessary. This is called a fundoplication, and it involves wrapping a portion of the stomach around the esophagus to prevent stomach acid from flowing back up.
