Semen analysis

Semen analysis is a laboratory test that examines the characteristics of a man’s semen to evaluate his fertility potential. This test is commonly performed when a couple is having difficulty conceiving, as up to 50% of infertility cases can be attributed to male factors.

The purpose of semen analysis is to evaluate the quantity and quality of the sperm in a man’s semen. The test examines various parameters, including sperm count, motility, morphology, volume, and pH level.

To perform a semen analysis, a man provides a semen sample, typically by masturbating into a sterile cup. The sample should be collected after a period of abstinence from sexual activity, usually 2-5 days, and should be delivered to the lab within 30-60 minutes of collection to ensure accurate results.

Once the sample is received, it is analyzed under a microscope to determine the sperm count, or the number of sperm per milliliter of semen. A normal sperm count is typically considered to be between 15 million and 200 million sperm per milliliter.

The motility of the sperm is also evaluated, which refers to the percentage of sperm that are moving. A normal motility rate is typically considered to be at least 40%.

The morphology of the sperm, or their shape and size, is also examined. Abnormal sperm morphology can affect the sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg.

Other parameters evaluated in a semen analysis include the volume of semen, which should be at least 1.5 milliliters, and the pH level, which should be between 7.2 and 8.0.

Semen analysis can provide valuable information about a man’s fertility potential, but it is not the only factor that determines fertility. Other factors, such as sexual function, hormonal levels, and medical history, should also be evaluated.

If a man’s semen analysis reveals abnormalities, further testing or treatment may be recommended. These may include hormonal therapy, medication, or assisted reproductive technologies such as intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization.

In conclusion, semen analysis is an important tool in the evaluation of male fertility. It provides valuable information about the quantity and quality of a man’s sperm, which can help diagnose and treat infertility. Men who are experiencing difficulty conceiving should consider undergoing a semen analysis to determine if there are any underlying issues affecting their fertility.
