What is GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition that affects the digestive system. It occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. GERD is a chronic condition that can lead to long-term complications if left untreated.

The main cause of GERD is a weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve, preventing stomach acid from flowing back up. When the LES is weakened, it can’t close properly, allowing stomach acid to reflux back into the esophagus. Some other factors that can contribute to GERD include obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and certain medications.

The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest that can be felt after eating or lying down. Other symptoms may include regurgitation of stomach contents into the mouth, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and coughing.

There are several treatments for GERD, including lifestyle changes, medication, and surgery. Lifestyle changes may include avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, losing weight, and avoiding lying down after eating. Medications such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors, and H2 blockers can help to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to strengthen the LES and prevent reflux.

If left untreated, GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), esophageal strictures (narrowing of the esophagus), and Barrett’s esophagus (changes in the lining of the esophagus that can lead to cancer). It is important to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of GERD, as early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent long-term complications.
